Just for your info, I have compressed all the maps with BZ2 compression which effectively tighly compresses files by half to 2/3 less saving download time and server space. When the server downloads them to you it will automatically decompress the maps.
For example de_castiglion which is 60mb is compressed to 25mb!
Most of you wont notice anything as you already have the maps but future downloads will be compressed for any new maps.
Thanks to Shippy for pointing me in the right direction.

I fucking hate downloading off random servers (part of the reason why I stick with BIATCH, downloading the same "multi-kill" sound file 20 times drives me mad) thanks fot this guys it's going to save a lot of players a hell of a lot of time.

snowy - did you talk to shippy about his "special" techniques, or did you just do something on yer own?
Shippy has a cunning (lingus?) method that lets you just bung the maps in the maps directory, non compressed and when they are downloaded, they get compressed on the fly
This means
a) You only need to upload a map once, to one location
you ain't wasting space on the webserver

Shippy never mentioned anything "special".. we both went looking for a utility that I could run under windows to compress them. Didnt take me long to compress nor much time to upload them. Most of the sounds too are now compressed along with some other large files.
Infuture if I am going to upload a new map I would compress it because it would save me time uploading. The space on the Webserver hosting our maps should be a lot less now.

actually, I got a warning this morning about being over 80% of the disk allowance
You need to talk to shippy - if you put the maps on the server normally and he does some magic then they will still be downloaded over http and get compressed on the fly too, so it's a win all round....

What's this???
Now that Shippy is back, I'm sure he will respond.
My understanding was if you leave them uncompressed in the hl2 dir then the engine will zip and ship em on the fly, on demand - so the wily admin only has to upload one version of a map.
if it really is the case that this is not the case, then I'm sure shippy can sort out a "special" directory on the server to put your maps in - the gameservers come with shedloads of diskspace after all....was just trying to save you guys some time.
How ya getting on with yer test server btw geary?
