Read whats been said, it isnt easy. Not something to be doing off a whim really, it takes time to learn. If your looking for a hobby then it might be a decent idea but if your expecting to open it up and throw out great maps just like that you will be disapointed

Mapping is quite easy once you get the hang on it mate. The source SDK is the place you want to be mate. The hardest part about mapping is making an original map that is even for both sides.
Best place to find your tutorials is www.hl2world.com got some good tutorials to get you started. First thing you want to do is get familiar with the functions of hammer, setting up textures, making glass, water etc. then start your first map. I starting mapping a week after I got HL2, and im still learning things that I didn't know before. If you need any help then just ask and il probably be able to make some simple tutorials for you.
